Description
Caption of the back of the photograph reads, “Aerial view of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior property at Bruceton, Pa., showing pyrometallurgical laboratory buildings (lower center), synthetic liquid fuels research buildings (upper center), and power plant, where coal-preparation studies also are conducted (right center).” In 1944 the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act was passed which authorized the Bureau of Mines to build energy research laboratories. One of these was named the Bruceton Research Center.
