Description
Over the years the Pittsburgh’s rivers had become polluted by drainage from coalmines, waste from industries lining the riverbanks, and sewage. Shortly after World War II, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority was established for the purpose of cleaning up the rivers. In 1956 under the Authority’s direction, construction was begun on a sewage disposal system to serve 68 municipalities in the county. As a result, the rivers are again being used for recreational purposes, including boating.
