Description
Mellon Park is located at Fifth and Shady Avenues in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood. In 1910 Richard Beatty Mellon built the largest and grandest of Pittsburgh’s mansions atop a Shadyside hillock. It was a prominent site because the property sloped down to Fifth Avenue to the north and Beechwood Boulevard to the south. In 1911 the architectural firm of Alden and Harlow designed the terraced gardens just below the mansion. After Melon and his wife died in the 1930s their son, Richard King Mellon, lived there briefly before retreating to Ligonier. The house was razed in 1940 after the City of Pittsburgh refused to forgive the taxes owed on the structure. In 1943 the estate became Mellon Park, which now also includes a playground and sports fields across Fifth Avenue. Today, the park is home to the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, American Youth Hostels, and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
