Description
Mellon Park, located at Fifth and Shady Avenues in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood, was once the property of Richard Beatty Mellon. In 1911 the architectural firm of Alden and Harlow designed the property, including a terraced garden. The garden featured decorative hedges in arabesque patterns, sculpture, and three pools. Mellon Park is the most intact of the Mellon estate landscapes in Western Pennsylvania known to have been designed in the 1920s by Olmsted Associates, the firm founded by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., son of the designer of Central Park in New York City. Most of the Olmsted features, including the pond garden, are now gone In 1943 the Mellon estate became Mellon Park, which now also includes a playground and sports fields across Fifth Avenue. Today, the park is home to the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, American Youth Hostels, and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
