Description
In 1889 prominent Pittsburgh resident Christopher Lyman Magee, and an associate, offered $125,000 for construction of the buildings for zoological gardens in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park. Between 10,000 and 15,000 people attended the zoo’s opening ceremony. In 1962 the Underground Zoo was built, and in 1967, the AquaZoo opened to the public. In 1971, the park-and-ride escalator was built to replace the steep steps that led to the Highland Park Zoo. In 1980, a $20 million, 10-year master renovation project began that placed the animals into natural surroundings such as Asian Forest, African Savannah, and Tropical Forest. Due to the increasing expenses of maintaining the zoo, it was privatized in 1994.
