Description
In 1895 the Pittsburgh philanthropist, Christopher Lyman Magee, donated $125,000 for the construction of a zoological garden in Highland Park. The first zoo was comprised of one large building at the top of a long, rolling hill covered with formal flowerbeds. This impressive Victorian-style building was 700 feet in length. Now, landscaped, winding walkways, and naturalistic exhibits have replaced the barred cages of that first zoo. The Aqua Zoo, shown in the picture, was built in 1967. Here fish and various forms of underwater life could be seen in a more natural environment. At that time it was known as the Aquarium and was the second largest aquarium in the United States. Its initial residents were collected during a three-week trip to the upper Amazon River by nine Pittsburgh residents led by Edward J Magee who was then president of the Pittsburgh Zoological Society.
