Description
Hartwood was designed by architect Alfred Hopkins in the late 1920s. He was directed by John and Mary Flinn Lawrence to borrow elements of form and structure from a manor house the Lawrences had seen in Broadway, Oxfordshire, England. Mary Flinn Lawrence, an advocate of women’s rights and a dedicated member of many charitable and cultural organizations, created Hartwood with money she inherited from her father. She transformed Hartwood Acres into a showcase for the equestrian arts, which included riding trails that extended for miles, show rings, steeplechase layouts, and ivy-covered stables. The stalls of the stables are made of varnished oak, which were polished daily in the past. The death of Mary Flinn Lawrence on October 29, 1974, opened her Hartwood estate for public use.
