Description
The new addition (shown here) is a huge rectangular building that covers a sub-tropical swamp with water plants growing in it and bananas and palms bordering it. From the walkway, visitors can observe live herons, flamingos, rails, ibis, and other exotic birds. This new addition was completed in 1968 and doubled the size of the existing institution. The National Aviary, as it is known today, was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. In the 1980s, the Aviary focused on a wildlife conservation program of breeding captive rare and endangered birds. Today, more than 600 birds of more than 220 species call the National Aviary home.
