Description
From a walkway (top center), visitors can observe live herons, flamingos, rails, ibis, and other exotic birds in the West Park Aviary-Conservatory’s largest exhibit. In 1967, the Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation donated approximately $933,000 for this new wing that included a walkthrough tropical marsh and six other exhibits. The Aviary, today known as the National Aviary, was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. Currently, the Aviary is home to over 600 birds of more than 220 species. A record-setting 113,000 people visited the facility in 2002.
