Description
Pittsburgh’s first conservatory, known as Phipps Conservatory, was established on this site (pictured) in the late nineteenth century until it was destroyed by a natural gas explosion in the late 1920s. The $340,000 West Park Aviary-Conservatory opened on August 10, 1952, two years after ground was broken. The Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation donated approximately $933,000 in 1967 for the construction on a new wing (foreground) that doubled the existing facilities size. The aviary was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. In the 1980s, the Aviary began to focus toward wildlife conservation by beginning the captive breeding of rare and endangered birds.
