Description
Castle Shannon Borough, a community located in the South Hills suburb of Pittsburgh, was incorporated in 1919. In 1872 the first railroads connecting the Village of Castle Shannon to Pittsburgh were completed. Coal mining along with a growing floral industry brought a wave of new immigrants to the area in the late nineteenth century. Castle Shannon Village became a center of commerce and entertainment in the South Hills that included grocery stores, hotels, a theater, and a department store. In 1920 the Borough of Castle Shannon, located about six miles from Pittsburgh, had a population of 2,353. In the year 2000 that population had grown to 8,556.
