Description
Terrace Village was a low cost public housing development in Pittsburgh’s Hill District neighborhood. The first Terrace Village development, located halfway between Center and Fifth Avenues on the top of Ruch Hill, included low rental homes for about 800 families. The project, which in some places required 100 feet of hillside to be removed, cost approximately $5 million. The second Terrace Village development, encompassing 90 acres and located on Goat and Gazzam Hills, housed approximately 1818 families and was one of the ten largest residential construction projects in the United States at that time. Terrace Village II cost about $11 million to construct and required over 2.4 million cubic yards of the hillside to be removed.
