Description
Deutschtown or Dutchtown is a historic district in Pittsburgh's East North Side neighborhood located primarily on Cedar Avenue and Pressley Street. The neighborhood was a stronghold for Pittsburgh’s German community in the nineteenth century. The community is primarily a residential neighborhood with late Victorian style homes and a number of churches. In the 1970s the City of Pittsburgh considered running interstate I-279 through the area, clearing away a mid-Victorian grade school close to Cedar Avenue, institutional buildings, and a number of homes to make way for the highway. However, these plans never came to fruition, and in 1983 the neighborhood was dedicated as a City Historic District by the Pittsburgh City Council.
