Description
Low cost housing being constructed in the Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood. Buildings seven, eight, nine, and ten are pictured in the photograph. The Homewood neighborhood derived its name from the estate of Judge William Wilkins, which was located south of Penn Avenue. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the area was populated by people of many races and ethic backgrounds. In the mid-twentieth century there was a large migration of African Americans into the Homewood community due to a number of factors, including Pittsburgh’s industrial boom following World War II, and the displacement of many families during Pittsburgh’s urban renewal program in the Lower Hill District.
