Description
Fort Duquesne Boulevard shortly after the demolition of the Pennsylvania Railroad overpass. Demolition work on the overpass began in October 1955 and was completed in 1956. In the background are the 'Three Sisters' Bridges spanning the Allegheny River. In the left center is the showboat "Majestic," which in 1923 started its career in Pittsburgh that lasted for the next twenty years. The showboat was owned and operated by Tom Reynolds. The Reynolds family lived, played, and performed on the "Majestic" until World War II, when it was docked in West Virginia for three years. The City of Cincinnati purchased the "Majestic" in 1967 to serve as a focal point for the developing Central Riverfront. Until 1988 it was leased to the University of Cincinnati as a summer stock theatre for its students. With the burning of the original "Goldenrod Showboat" in Saint Louis, Missouri, on June 1, 1962, the showboat "Majestic" became the last of the "floating operas." In 1989 the showboat "Majestic" became an official National Historical Landmark.
