Description
The Liberty Bridge was built in 1928 by Allegheny County and was designed by George S. Richardson. The bridge, spanning the Monongahela River between the Boulevard of the Allies and the Liberty Tubes, has 420-foot main spans with lower chords shaped like segmental arches, though in fact they consist of two cantilever trusses and a suspended span. The total length (including longest elevated ramp) is 2663 feet with the height of the deck at 44.4 feet near the piers. The bridge had been sought by motorists for two decades and on opening day, March 27, 1928, a mile-long procession of cars were present to mark the event. In 1982 the deck and the ornamental parts of the bridge were reconstructed. As a result, it changed the original appearance of the structure.
