Description
The beginning stages of the Fort Pitt Bridge construction. Pictured at left center are the concrete piers being constructed within a cofferdam, which was a temporary watertight enclosure that was pumped dry to expose the bottom of the Monongahela River. In the left background is the Point Bridge, which was demolished in the summer of 1970. The Fort Pitt Bridge opened on June 19, 1959, 15 1/2 months before the Fort Pitt Tunnels were opened.
