Description
The Birmingham Bridge (pictured still under construction), spans the Monongahela River near the site of the old Brady Street Bridge at South Twenty-Second Street. The $23 million divided six-lane Birmingham Bridge was built by Buchart Horn Inc. and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. It opened to traffic on September 2, 1977. The total length (including the longest elevated ramp) of the bridge is 1,662 feet with a vertical clearance of 64.8 feet at the channel span. The steel bowstring arch, wire rope suspension bridge connects the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh with the Oakland section of the city. In the foreground is Second Avenue.
