Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “This architecturally unique Museum structure is on the exact location of one of the bastions of Fort Pitt, and follows the precise shape and contour of the original. Gun platforms and embrasures have been re-created atop the structure. Entrance to the Museum is through the main door (left center of photograph); the forested ridge in the background is Mount Washington, on the far bank of the Monongahela River. Just beyond the flagpole (right) is the famous Fort Pitt Blockhouse, the only surviving structure in the relatively small area that once was America’s most vital frontier post.” The Fort Pitt Museum, located at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh, was built by the General State Authority for the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters as part of the larger development of Point State Park. The Museum, opened in June 1969, includes exhibits and dioramas on both the military and early industrial history of Pittsburgh.
