Description
Gateway Center, consisting of Gateway Plaza (1950-1953), was originally conceived in 1947. The One, Two, and Three Gateway Buildings (top left background) were designed by architects Otto Eggers and Daniel Higgins, with Irwin Clavan. Scarcities during the Korean War required that chrome-alloyed steel be substituted for the stainless steel that was originally specified. The Gateway Center buildings were completed around 1952. Note the beginning stages of construction of the Fort Pitt Bridge (right) on the bank of the Monongahela River.
