Description
Gateway Center, consisting of Gateway Plaza (1950-1953), was originally conceived in 1947. After the complex of industrial buildings in the area were cleared, the Equitable Life Assurance Society began construction of Gateway Center in the early 1950s. This marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance. The One, Two, and Three Gateway buildings (pictured here still under construction) were designed by architects Otto Eggers and Daniel Higgins, with Irwin Clavan. Scarcities during the Korean War required that chrome-alloyed steel be substituted for the stainless steel that was originally specified. The Gateway Center buildings were completed around 1952.
