Description
After the complex of industrial buildings, homes, and rail lines in the area were cleared, the Equitable Life Assurance Society began construction of Gateway Center in the early 1950s. Gateway Center was a chance for architects to develop a large urban area from the ground up and it became the first real use of noted Swiss architect Le Corbusier’s 1922 design. Starrett Brothers and Eken, the firm that built the Empire State Building in New York City, used one-third of Equitable’s property for the buildings (pictured) and preserved the rest for parklets, fountains, and tree-lined walkways. This was a major innovation in urban development at the time and marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance. The Gateway Center buildings (pictured here) were completed around 1952.
