Description
After the complex of industrial buildings in the area was cleared, Equitable Life Assurance Society began construction of Gateway Center in the early 1950s. This marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance. The One, Two, and Three Gateway Buildings (pictured here still under construction) were designed by architects Otto Eggers and Daniel Higgins, with Irwin Clavan. The design for the first Gateway buildings and the park setting was created in 1922 by the noted Swiss architect Charles Edouard Jeanneret, or known as Le Corbusier. Pittsburgh corporations signed leases at Gateway Center without even looking at a photograph of the buildings they were promising to move into. The Gateway Center buildings were completed around 1952.
