Description
The Point Redevelopment Project looking toward Penn Avenue through the steel frame of the new Gateway Center building in downtown Pittsburgh. In the late 1940s, one of Pittsburgh’s greatest fires destroyed the sprawling elevated yards and warehouses of the Wabash Railroad located in present day Gateway Center. This disaster was an opportunity for the State of Pennsylvania, under the leadership of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development (ACCD), to take over almost half of the area below present Stanwix Street. The Equitable Life Assurance Society entered into a redevelopment plan with the ACCD to purchase the entire remaining area up to Stanwix Street. After the complex of buildings in the area was cleared, the company began construction of Gateway Center in the early 1950s. This marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance.
