Description
The corner of Bigelow Boulevard and Sennott Street. Note the Litchfield Tower dormitories in the background (tall round buildings). This was the future site of Hillman Library at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. The site was located between Forbes Field, the home of the Pirates baseball team, and Forbes Avenue. The land bordering Forbes Field was donated to the University of Pittsburgh by John Hillman in the 1950s. Max Abramovitz designed the master plan for the buildings that were to be located on that site. Construction on the library began in 1964. The major funding for the construction was provided by the Hillman Family and the Hillman Foundation ($3 million) and the General State Authority ($8 million). The library opened in 1968.
