Description
George Hubbard Clapp Hall, located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was erected in 1956. The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust bought a three-acre plot of land on the eastern half of the Cathedral campus for $675,000 and gave it to the University to build Clapp Hall. The building was named after George Hubbard Clapp (class of 1877), the University’s oldest alumnus, a trustee for forty-six years (since 1902), and president of trustees for forty-one years (since 1907). The structure originally housed the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Metallurgy, and Chemical Engineering. Today, the Department of Biological Sciences occupies the Ground, First, Second, and Third floors of Clapp Hall.
