Description
Allegheny Observatory on Observatory Hill in Riverview Park in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh was constructed in a mixed Classical style, which includes Greek Ionic columns and Roman balustrades. The structure houses several telescopes from various eras in the development of the science of astronomy and a columbarium containing the ashes of John Brashear and his wife. Brashear was an astronomer and maker of scientific instruments who was responsible for all equipment at the observatory. In 1915 he was named the Pennsylvania's “most distinguished man.”
