Description
The United States Steel Building, located at 600 Grant Street and designed by Harrison, Abramovitz & Abbe in 1970, is 841 feet in height with 64 floors. It is America’s tallest building between New York and Chicago and was the final building to be completed in Pittsburgh’s first renaissance. It was constructed with United States Steel’s specially made CORTEN Weathering Steel, a product designed to weather into a rusty brown color. The building had eighteen support columns containing half a million gallons of water and antifreeze. If attacked by fire, the liquid solution would dissipate its heat by convection allowing the columns to resist flames for four hours. The building is shaped like a triangle, which reflected the shape of downtown Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle. The tower was known as USX Tower up until early 2002 when its name was changed to U.S. Steel Tower. In the right background is the Mellon Arena, formally known as the Civic Arena.
