Description
A policeman directs traffic at the corner of Sixth and Grant Streets in downtown Pittsburgh. The structures at this corner would later be razed for the construction of the H.K. Porter Building. The Porter Building, designed by architects Harrison and Abramovitz, was completed in 1958 as part of the revitalization of downtown Pittsburgh during the 1950s Renaissance I. The 18-story office building was headquarters for H.K. Porter Company, established in 1866 by H.K. Porter as a manufacturer of steam locomotives for factories, mills and mines. Under the leadership of Thomas Mellon Evans, the company diversified its products following World War II through the late 1980s. The building, now known as 601 Grant Street, houses a number of small business related companies.
