Description
The Union Trust Building, located at 435 Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh and designed by Frederick J. Osterling, was built as the Union Arcade in 1915-16 by Henry Clay Frick, who had bought the site from the Roman Catholic Diocese, which had located Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Cathedral there in 1828-1903. The architectural style of the building is that of the late North French and Flemish Gothic of the fifteenth century. Inside was space for 240 shops, facing two four-story open arcade spaces, and about 700 offices. In 1923 the building was bought by the Union Trust Company and the first four floors of the Fifth Avenue side were remodeled.
