Description
Peabody High School was named in honor of Dr. Benjamin H. Peabody, a prominent East Liberty physician, who for many years was a member of the Highland District School Board. His portrait hangs on the wall in the front corridor of the school. Peabody was founded in 1911 and, at first, occupied only an addition to the old Margaretta Grammar School. The building was remodeled in 1912 and 1915, an annex, designed by architect Edward Stotz, was added. At one of the school's entrances in Peabody's Flagstaff War Memorial, designed by the Pittsburgh artist Frank Vittor and paid for by Peabody students, alumni, and faculty without any outside assistance. The front tablet on the monument contains the names of the seventeen Peabody boys who lost their lives in the First World War while the panels that encircle the base contain the names of 549 other Peabody students who served their country in the army, navy, and air forces. In 1975-1978 the entire building was expanded and renovated. The school serves the Pittsburgh communities of Bloomfield, Friendship, East Liberty, Garfield, Highland Park, Larimer, Lawrenceville, Lincoln, Morningside, Shadyside, and stanton Heights.
