Description
Peabody High School, named in honor of Dr. Benjamin Helme Peabody, a prominent East Liberty physician and school board member, opened in 1911. Peabody was originally built as an addition to the Margaretta Elementary School, replacing two branches of the old Central High School in East Liberty, the Osceola and Lincoln High Schools. The school has undergone numerous renovations, overseen by various architects. In 1925 the Peabody High School Annex, which included an auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, and choral room, was designed by Edward B. Lee. In June 1975, a $12.5 million expansion project was undertaken that included a four-station gymnasium with seating for 2000, a new library, new cafeteria facilities, a six-lane swimming pool, a commons area, and 24 additional classrooms. This renovation project was overseen by architect N. John Cunzolo.
