Description
Patricia Prattis Jennings (1941-). Born in Pittsburgh. Gave her debut solo piano performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony at the age of 14, in 1956. In 1964 she was contracted with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to play piano, harpsichord, organ and celesta. She was the first African American woman to earn a contract with an American national symphony – with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as principal keyboardist. Jennings retired from the Pittsburgh Symphony after 40 years in 2006. Jennings talks about teaching music to youngsters; her newsletter the Symphonium for African American symphony musicians; African American's interest in and exposure to classical music; joining the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the age of 23 in 1964; and PSO conductor William Steinberg.
