Content Description

The Hill District Community Collection contains materials that document life in Pittsburgh's Hill District throughout the 1900s, into the early 2000s. Materials document Black history in the Hill District, in Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, and throughout the United States. Materials include (but not limited to) books, newspaper clippings, newspapers, photographs,and other ephemera originating from the community or related to its history.

Biographical / Historical

The Hill District Community Collection, housed at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Hill District Branch, originates from the Hill District community, one of Pittsburgh's many neighborhoods that harbor a unique, rich history. The Hill District is a historically Black neighborhood and the collection reflects the lives lived by its residents over the course of the 1900s into the early 2000s. Materials cover historic community arts and culture, Civil Rights Movement activism, developments in educational opportunities, Urban Renewal, community developments and general happenings in the community.
