Scope and Contents

The ARAD Collection spans the years 1993 to 2007 and consists of five series: Reports 1995-2006, Budgets 1994-2005, Public Relations 1994-2007, Correspondence 1993-2005 [1998], and Allegheny County Library Association 1993-2002.

The materials in this collection consist primarily of 8.5"x11" copy paper. A few items are bound with plastic spirals. The content of those documents primarily includes letters and faxes on letterhead, annual reports, and budget requests. There are a small number of items such as printed PowerPoint slides, glossy pamphlets, and newspaper clippings.

The collection is 6 boxes, or 2.5 linear feet, with no oversized materials, and there are no special preservation considerations. Arrangement is based upon type of content rather than chronology. Within series, however, materials are in some cases ordered by year. For Annual Report and Budget folders, dates refer to date of creation, not the proposed year.

Biographical / Historical

There have been eleven Directors of CLP. The first Director, Edwin H. Anderson, was succeeded by ten subsequent Directors, including the present Mary Frances Cooper. Since ARAD was not created until 1993, this part of the collection pertains to the four most recent CLP Directors. Robert B. Croneberger, the eighth Director, began in 1986 and died of cancer in 1998, after which Gladys Maharam, an interim director, held the position. In 1999, Herb Elish was hired as Director. Dr. Barbara K. Mistick is the last Director appearing in these records, as they end before Mary Frances Cooper began.

ARAD is an Allegheny County administered agency which awards grants to county non-profit organizations. ARAD's sole funding source is a county sales tax. Half of those funds support the grant awards, and the other half supports municipal governments and public works within Allegheny County. CLP has been a major recipient of ARAD grants since the creation of the program in 1993.
