View of Vesta No. 4 Mine trestle and river work. Vesta No. 4 Mine, owned and operated by Vesta-Shannopin Coal Division of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, was located on the Pennsylvania Railroad, Monongahela Division, and the Monongahela River. The main portal was located near the dividing line between California and Coal Center Boroughs, with other portals located at Daisytown, West Pike Run Township, and Richeyville, Centerville Township, all in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Vesta No. 4 Mine was once the largest bituminous coal mine in the world. The mine was opened circa 1903, was closed in 1957, was temporarily re-opened in 1960 and permanently closed in 1984.
