Description
Several people walking down stairs underneath the enormous columns of the Mellon Institute. The structure, located in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, was built from 1931-1937 and was modeled after the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The elevation of the building on the Fifth Avenue side (shown here) replicated the length of the Parthenon. The 62 stone columns surrounding the building are 42 feet high and each weighs 60 tons. The building extends six stories underground to the bedrock to minimize vibrations that may interfere with scientific experiments being conducted in the building.
