Description
View of railroad tracks as they enter U. S. Steel's Clairton Plant. Still in operation, the Clairton Plant is located 20 miles south of Pittsburgh on 392 acres along 3.3 miles of the west bank of the Monongahela River. The plant was built in 1901 by the St. Clair Steel Company and acquired by U. S. Steel in 1904. The largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States, Clairton Plant operates nine coke oven batteries and produces approximately 4.7 million tons of coke annually.
