Description
View looking north from Penn Avenue showing the Spear and Company and the Kreider Harnish Company buildings in the forground with the R.D. Nuttall Co. and the Nerst Lamp Co. building behind during planning of Penn Avenue district improvements at Garrison Place. Spear and Company was founded about 1892 and sold furniture and carpet. The company had two location in Pittsburgh, two locations in New York, and a location in Cincinnati. The Kreider Harnish Company was part of the A. S. Kreider Company shoe manufacturing with headquarters in Chicago. R.D. Nuttall Co. was founded in 1887. Nuttall was a pioneer in gear development having created the single helical gear. He also developed flexible gearing for transportation applications, designed and manufactured the first integral gearmotor, and developed force fed lubrication for large industrial enclosed gear drives. The company was purchased by Westinghouse in 1928. Still in existence, the company was most recently purchased by Altra Industrial Motors in 2004.
