Evelyn Brooks describes her husband's work as a "skycap," or airport porter, and her own work as a housekeeper for a white family, as well as her mother's attitude toward that work. She discusses the changes that Homestead has experienced over the decades, pointing out the greater rate of employment of Black people in all levels of the education system.
