She describes the impact of the Great Depression on her family, with her father's retirement from the steel mill in 1930 and her brothers' employment in the WPA and CCC. She emphasizes the central role that church organizations played in her education and recreation as a young woman and describes the careers that her siblings and husband eventually attained.
