Description
Esther Newman, a 79-year-old woman originally from Hungary, recounts her immigration to the United States. She arrived in New York in 1913, living in poor conditions on the East Side before eventually moving to Pittsburgh, where she married and settled in Hazelwood. Newman worked in dressmaking, facing long hours and modest wages. She expresses her initial homesickness, the challenges of language, and the contrast between her upbringing in Hungary and raising children in America.
