Description
During the Cold War, the 701st AAA Battalion anti-aircraft battery was located in Frick Park by the Nicholson Street entrance (Blue Slide Playground). The photo was taken on the diagonal to show the trucks lined up at the battery. The anti-aircraft artillery site in Frick Park became operational in 1953 and consisted of a four 90-mm gun battery plus associated supplies, ammunition, administrative and communication facilities. It was part of a ring of 12 Nike anti-aircraft missile bases located around Pittsburgh.
