Description
The granite Catahecassa Fountain was built around 1912. It is located on East Circuit Road at the bottom of the stone steps leading to the Neill Log House on the edge of the Bob O’Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park. The granite fountain, now stopped up, was built around 1912 to honor a leader of the Shawnees who was born around 1721. The bronze plaque on the fountain says, "Catahecassa, Blackhoof, war chief of the Shawnees, was present at the defeat of Braddock in 1755 and took part in all subsequent wars until the treaty of Greenville in 1795, after which he remained a friend and ally of the United States." The Neill Log House dates to 1795 and was built by Robert Neill, who owned the 262-acre tract it sits on at the time. The land was later acquired by Mary Schenley’s maternal grandfather, Gen. James O’Hara, and inherited by her in 1850. Mary Schenley rented the house and land to tenant farmers before donating it to the City of Pittsburgh for a park. After the golf course was built in 1902, the Neill Log house was used as a rest stop for golfers and as a maintenance building. It was restored by Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation in 1969, but the double fireplace and chimney are original. The Neill Log House was designated a Historic Structure by the City of Pittsburgh in 1977 and was a contributing factor for Schenley Park being put on the National Park Service’s list of National Historic Places.
