An image of the construction of a bear trap gate inside a cofferdam in the Ohio River by Lock and Dam 9. The term "bear trap" is used to describe a type of dam that is movable and usually has two leaves that deepen the river for navigation. A cofferdam is an airtight structure that is pumped dry to enable construction below the shoreline. Lock and Dam 9 was located near New Cumberland, W. Va.
