Description
Steam turbine generators at the Westinghouse Air Brake Company (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Caption on back of photograph reads: "The commercial steam turbine was introduced into America by Westinghouse about 1895. A 120 KW. D. C. set was built at Pittsburgh in 1896, the steam end being quite satisfactory. In 1899 three 400 K.W. A. C. sets were put in at the Air Brake Co., Wilmerding - the first serious installation in America. The machines were (unluckily) scrapped a few years ago. In 1900 a 2000 KW. unit was installed at the Hartford, Conn. central station; at least twice the size of any other in the world. Shortly thereafter the General Electric Company entered the field with 5000 KW. vertical units for the Commonwealth, Edison, Chicago. For a time the G. E. units were easily distinguishable by their vertical design, but with increasing speeds and sizes this feature was abandoned. Within the next few years the large steam engine and with it the large engine type alternator, and the direct generation of direct current in large quantities, were all killed by the turbine."
