Description
Flow chart demonstrating the plate glass manufacturing process used by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. As is depicted, molten glass is extracted from the tank through a set of rollers. Once rolled, the glass ribbon is gradually cooled in the annealing lehr. Once the glass ribbon passes through the initial inspection booth, it is cut and snapped into sheets. The sheets of glass are then either transported to bulk storage or conveyed to the grinding and polishing lines. Specialized machines grind and polish both sides of the glass sheets in order to enhance the optical quality of the glass. Once the grinding and polishing is complete, the sheets of glass are then further inspected and cut down to meet order specifications before being shipped out.
