Description
J. Leonard Levy (1865-1917) was Rabbi of Rodef Shalom congregation from 1901 until his death in 1917 at age 51. Born and educated in London, he was the youngest ordained rabbi n England when he became the leader of the Bristol synagogue. His views began to lean more toward Reform Judaism, and in 1889 he accepted a position as rabbi in Sacramento, California. After four years there, he became assistant rabbi at Keneseth Israel Congregation in Philadelphia. From an early age, Rabbi Levy demonstrated a gift for oratory, a depth of scholarship, and an extraordinary talent for leadership. Membership at Rodef Shalom increased dramatically during his rabbinate, he spearheaded interfaith dialogue with Christian clergy in Pittsburgh, and he was involved in all the significant social causes of the Progressive Era.
