Description
Solomon Bennett Freehof (1892-1990) was Rabbi of Rodef Shalom Congregation from 1934 to 1966. Rabbi Freehof was born in London and came to the Unites States as a child. He was educated at the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College, where he later was a professor. He was a chaplain in the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. After serving KAM Temple in Chicago as rabbi for 10 years, he came to Pittsburgh and made the city his home. Renowned for his preaching style and his scholarly writing on the Bible and on rabbinic literature, Dr. Freehof also served as president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the World Union for Progressive Judaism. A Pittsburgh Pirates fan and amateur woodworker and bookbinder in his retirement, Dr. Freehof continued to travel, preach, and write until shortly before his death in 1990.
