Description
When President William Howard Taft visited Rodef Shalom on May 29, 1909, it was the first time a sitting United States President spoke from the pulpit of a Jewish house of worship during regular Sabbath services. Taft had come at the invitation of Rabbi J. Leonard Levy, and his short speech to an overflow crowd at the temple that day emphasized his intention to be the President of all the American people. This photograph shows President Taft, center, flanked by Secret Service agents on the left and Congregational President Abraham Lippman on the right. The tall structure in the background is an ornamental electrolier designed by the Rookwood Pottery Company.
